Associate Degree Radiologic Technology Program Philosophy/Mission

The DACC Radiologic Technology Program has been in existence and fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology since 1975.

The Radiologic Technology Program of Doña Ana Community College is committed to the principle that higher education enables students to advance professionally as well as personally. The Radiologic Technology Program offers and delivers a high standard of radiologic, didactic, and clinical education for the student which develops their potential as effective future technologists. The Program recognizes, supports and complies with the educational philosophy and mission of Doña Ana Community College and New Mexico State University. MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the DACC Radiologic Technology Program is to provide the student with the academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to attain eligibility for certification and meaningful employment in the diagnostic medical imaging profession.

Associate Degree Radiologic Technology Program Goals and Student Learning Outcomes:

Fullfillment of the program mission is assessed by the degree to which the program achieves the following goals and learning outcomes:

Goal 1: Students will be clinically competent.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Students will demonstrate safe operation of radiographic equipment to produce quality diagnostic radiographic images.

2. Students will be able to appropriately position patients, identify radiographic anatomy and pathological conditions.

Goal 2: Students will communicate effectively.

Student Learning Outcomes:

3. Students will demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills.

4. Students will accurately document/record data in accordance with clinical site policies and procedures.

Goal 3: Students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills.

5. Students will demonstrate the ability to make decisions and use independent judgment.

6. Students will analyze radiographic images for technical and positioning accuracy and make modifications as needed.

Goal 4: Students will model professionalism.

Student Learning Outcomes:

7. Students will conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner and function effectively as a member of the healthcare team in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Standards and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Code of Ethics.

8. Students will practice professionalism by attending professional development opportunities, joining professional organizations, and/or reading professional journals.

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGISTS are an important part of the medical team as they perform various radiographic procedures and collect necessary technical data for optimal patient assessment while maintaining safe radiation exposures for both patients and healthcare personnel.

Students in the Radiologic Technology program receive training both in the classroom and in clinical settings, where they work alongside nurses, physicians, and other health-care professionals.  In the classroom, students learn about the anatomy and function of the human body, radiographic physics and equipment, radiographic procedures and safe radiation exposures. Laboratory activities are also implemented to achieve proper patient positioning skills.

Clinical work presents students with an opportunity for real life experience and introduces them to imaging modalities. Multiple clinic locations are offered in southern New Mexico including Las Cruces, Carlsbad, Alamogordo, Deming, Silver City, Artesia, Ruidoso and El Paso, TX.

General education and related classes are required prior to applying for the Radiologic Technology program.  Upon graduation and successful completion of the national registry exam, persons who enter this field find job opportunities in various healthcare facilities.

The Radiologic Technology Club is an active organization consisting of first and second year radiologic technology students.  Students participate in fund-raising projects to allow them to attend regional, state, and national medical imaging conferences.

Special Admissions Criteria

Radiologic Technology is a limited-entry program.  The following items are among the criteria considered in the selection of program applicants:

  • Overall college GPA
  • Prerequisite GPA (The students most likely to be competitive in the admissions process will have earned a B or better in their prerequisites.)
  • Completion of prerequisites
  • Completion of TEAS test (TEAS test may only be taken once)
  • County of residence
  • Advanced science or math courses
  • Successful interview
  • Background check, drug screen and FBI fingerprints
