Overview of H & PS Programs
Dental Assisting: Dental assistants may prepare equipment, materials, and instruments for patient care; perform sterilization and disinfection procedures; provide patients with instructions for dental procedures; create temporary crowns; provide coronal polishing and placement of sealants; take impressions of teeth; create study casts (molds); take and review patient medical histories; expose and develop radiographs; and a variety of other duties. They may also be responsible for administrative tasks, such as billing, patient verification, scheduling of various types of treatment appointments, and material inventory.
Dental Hygiene: A dental hygienist is a vital member of a team of dental professionals dedicated to improving oral health and supporting the general health of individuals and groups. As licensed professionals, dental hygienists provide educational, clinical, and therapeutic services and may be involved in research, administration, client/patient advocacy, and marketing or consulting.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography: A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses specialized equipment to create images of structures inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. Sonography uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to examine many parts of the body, such as the abdomen, breasts, female reproductive system, prostate, heart, and blood vessels. It is also used to guide tissue biopsy for lab testing.
Education: The Education Program offers two Associates Degree programs; the Associates in Early Childhood and the Associate in Education. There are also courses designed to help students attain the NM Child Development Certificate and the NM Early Childhood Administrative License.
Emergency Medical Services: Pre hospital emergency medical care is a challenging and exciting profession. People’s lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Emergency medical services (EMS) professionals may work at any of four different levels: first responder, EMT–basic, EMT–intermediate, and paramedic.
Fire Investigations: Fire investigations is a complex career field that involves multiple disciplines, including the criminal justice system. They usually rely on scientific principles and research in an analysis of fire remains to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Investigators work to determine whether the fire was deliberately set and what contributed to its subsequent growth. These findings can become an integral part of a criminal investigation that may require legal action to be taken against the responsible party.
Fire Science Technology: The Fire Science Technology Program provides training for firefighting personnel, which is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. This program provides classroom instruction leading to an associate of applied science degree in fire science technology or a certificate of completion in firefighting. It is suited to those who are new to the field, as well as seasoned professionals.
Health Care Assistant: This versatile program has been designed to allow graduates to take advantage of expanding career opportunities available throughout the healthcare system. This program consists of options which can be taken separately for individual certifications, or together as part of a complete program. Individual options are phlebotomy, nursing assistant, and electrocardiogram technician.
Health Occupations: The Health Occupations Program offers a variety of science classes that include laboratories at multiple satellite locations. These courses include Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Ethics, and Nutrition essential for both General Education and Allied Health programs.
Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice: The Law Enforcement program provides classroom instruction leading to an associate degree in the fields of corrections or law enforcement. This program provides courses to prepare for entry-level careers in agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as private agencies.
Law Enforcement Academy: This program is not currently recruiting or enrolling students, but as soon as certification is complete, a community outreach and recruitment program will be initiated.
Nursing: The Nursing program at DACC affords students the opportunity to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Registered Nurses (RN), and members of a respected and rewarding profession. Nursing is a dynamic and exciting discipline offering not only the rewarding experiences of helping others achieve their health care goals, but also enabling the nurse to become a part of the rapidly advancing health delivery system of the future.
Public Health: The associate of applied science degree in public health provides the initial course work to prepare students for a career in public health. Public health professionals work with community leaders to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate public health interventions such as smoking cessation, chronic and infectious disease awareness campaigns, vaccination programs, and family planning and prenatal care initiatives.
Radiologic Technology: The DACC Radiologic Technology Program provides the student with the academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to attain eligibility for certification and meaningful employment in the diagnostic imaging profession. Radiologic technologists typically find employment in settings such as hospitals, imaging centers, clinics and physicians’ offices. Opportunities for specialization in specific areas of medical imaging such as mammography, CT, MRI, and the Cardiac Cath Lab are possible.
Respiratory Therapy: Respiratory therapy is an allied health profession that deals with patients with cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory therapists are health professionals that evaluate, treat, and manage patients with respiratory problems and other cardiopulmonary disorders under medical supervision. Respiratory therapists perform patient assessment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, emergency and critical care, patient education, pulmonary rehabilitation and home care.
